You will have a hard time to reinvent yourself, when everyone around you pushes you right back where they have put you for years. Exchanging your 3-piece suit for beach-bum attire and going to work will not go down well in your social environment, and it will not help you anyway. You cannot have your cake and eat it too. You will need a new stage with a new audience, at least for a while. That is why it is not a good idea to take a part of your old environment with you, not even your best friends. People who love you might not like this, and you might not like this. But it is necessary.
And here we have a problem. For almost everyone it is very stressful to be all alone in a new strange environment. For many people it is a nightmare. That is exactly NOT what you need. So you need a new environment with new people but feel safe. This is usually solved by making an artificial social environment, with people-just-like-you. A retreat, a long sailing trip on a big boat, walking a pilgrims' trail with a group of other pilgrims. These are fine, but they are not ideal solutions. Your new environment needs to be, for want of a better word, “real”. You need to have a clear role there, be a part of that social environment. Without some sort of responsibility (yes I know, I know, that is exactly what you are fed up with, I know), but without some sort of responsibility it is all just make-belief, shallow entertainment. I have rarely seen even a month-long retreat full of Eastern wisdom or creative expression make any lasting change, and that is exactly because there is not any responsibility attached. It may feel nice to be part of a select group of truth-seekers or underappreciated talent, but without responsibility it is all a game, and you do not change by playing no-obligation games.
You need a role in that environment, you need to be part of a social network where you have a position, that comes with responsibility and obligations. You want to be free, but freedom is not a lack of responsibilities. Freedom without any demands is a hell of insignificant boredom, and anyway, it will not help you change. If you just pay to be somewhere and are treated as a guest (or worse still, as a client or patient), not much is going to reset in your head, because you don’t get a new role at all.
